Chapter 443 Oregon Laws 2001
AN ACT
SB 65
Relating to students;
creating new provisions; and amending ORS 329.487.
Be It Enacted by the People of the State of Oregon:
SECTION 1.
ORS 329.487 is amended to read:
329.487. (1) In the 21st century, all Oregonians should be
able to communicate in a second language. School districts shall make available
to all students the opportunity to achieve this goal.
(2) [Prior to the end
of the 2004-2005 school year,] All students who have [completed grade 12 shall have completed a minimum of two years of
second language instruction and] met
the requirements for a Certificate of Initial Mastery shall demonstrate a
level of proficiency in a second language as determined by the school district
board.
(3) In the 21st century,
all Oregon students should have the opportunity to participate in a music
curriculum. School districts shall make available to all students the
opportunity to demonstrate a level of proficiency in the arts, including music,
as determined by the school district board.
[(3)] (4) Each school district board shall
determine the method of implementation of the second language and music [requirement under subsection (2) of] requirements of this section.
(5) Each school
district board shall adopt criteria for granting individual students [may be granted] a waiver of the second
language [requirement under subsection
(2) of] and music requirements of
this section [based on criteria
established by the school district board].
SECTION 2.
The amendments to ORS 329.487 by section
1 of this 2001 Act relating to the second language requirement first apply to
students in the 2004-2005 school year.
