                             AN ACT
 
 
Relating to highway signs; and declaring an emergency.
 
Be It Enacted by the People of the State of Oregon:
 
  SECTION 1.  { + Section 2 of this 2001 Act is added to and made
a part of ORS 377.700 to 377.840. + }
  SECTION 2.  { + (1) The Department of Transportation shall
ensure that all construction and engineering plans for state
highways identify the locations of motorist informational signs,
tourist oriented directional signs and logo signs. The department
shall adopt written plans for protecting the signs from damage
during construction.
  (2) If any sign specified in subsection (1) of this section is
damaged, destroyed or lost as a result of work on a highway done
by the department, the department shall repair or replace the
sign. + }
  SECTION 3.  { + The Department of Transportation and the Travel
Information Council shall submit a report to the Seventy-second
Legislative Assembly regarding the effectiveness of efforts made
during the 2001-2003 biennium to maintain motorist informational
signs, tourist oriented directional signs and logo signs at
construction locations. The report shall include the following:
  (1) The number of complaints filed regarding the damage or loss
of motorist informational signs, tourist oriented directional
signs and logo signs;
  (2) The number of days motorist informational signs, tourist
oriented directional signs and logo signs were out of service;
  (3) A list of projects where motorist informational signs,
tourist oriented directional signs and logo signs were either
temporarily removed or were lost or damaged; and
  (4) A list of businesses and attractions identified by the
motorist informational signs, tourist oriented directional signs
and logo signs that were temporarily removed or were lost or
damaged. + }
  SECTION 4.  { + This 2001 Act being necessary for the immediate
preservation of the public peace, health and safety, an emergency
is declared to exist, and this 2001 Act takes effect on its
passage. + }
