brief statement of the essential features of the measure as
introduced.
 
  Provides additional sanctions for parents convicted of
violating the compulsory school attendance requirements.
  Punishes failure to comply with ordered sanction by maximum
penalty of $300.
 
                        A BILL FOR AN ACT
Relating to compulsory school attendance.
Be It Enacted by the People of the State of Oregon:
  SECTION 1.  { + (1) In addition to any other penalties provided
by law, a defendant convicted of violating ORS 339.020 or 339.035
may, based on ability to pay, be ordered to:
  (a) Attend parenting classes;
  (b) Attend a class or program designed to educate a defendant
on the importance of education to minors;
  (c) Obtain medical or psychological care or treatment for the
minor;
  (d) Cooperate with the school in obtaining remedial education
or tutoring for the minor to assist the minor in achieving grade
level competence;
  (e) Obtain educational testing for the minor to ascertain the
minor's learning abilities and educational level; or
  (f) Cooperate with the court or the school district in any
program designed to aid the minor in obtaining an education and
preventing absenteeism.
  (2)(a) Failure of a defendant to comply with an order issued
under this section is punishable as a Class B violation.
  (b) Any fine assessed under paragraph (a) of this subsection
may be waived by the court upon successful compliance with the
court order. + }
