                             SUMMARY
 
The following summary is not prepared by the sponsors of the
measure and is not a part of the body thereof subject to
consideration by the Legislative Assembly. It is an editor's
brief statement of the essential features of the measure as
introduced.
 
  Congratulates fraternity and sorority system at University of
Oregon for 100 years of service and leadership.
 
                      CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
  Whereas the first fraternity at the University of Oregon was
founded in 1900, and the first sorority at the University of
Oregon was founded in 1908; and
  Whereas there are currently 20 fraternities and 10 sororities
active on the campus of the University of Oregon; and
  Whereas the fraternity and sorority system fosters the
principles of leadership, philanthropy, scholarship and
friendship; and
  Whereas of the 129 undergraduate student groups active on the
campus of the University of Oregon, 109 of those groups have
participants who are fraternity or sorority members; and
  Whereas 86 percent of those 109 student groups have fraternity
or sorority members on their executive governing boards,
resulting in 67 percent of 129 student groups having leaders who
are fraternity or sorority members; and
  Whereas the University of Oregon fraternity and sorority
community is nationally recognized and has won 21 awards in the
past two years; and
  Whereas fraternity and sorority members represent only 10
percent of the undergraduate student population, yet hold nearly
65 percent of the leadership positions on the University of
Oregon campus; and
  Whereas the fraternity and sorority system promotes the
development of values-centered leaders, scholars and
community-minded individuals within the context of brotherhood
and sisterhood; and
  Whereas the fraternity and sorority system offers undergraduate
students unique opportunities for personal development,
organizational management and self-governance; and
  Whereas the values-centered fraternity and sorority system
contributes to the academic mission of the university; and
  Whereas among the numerous prominent and successful former
Greeks from the University of Oregon are: Phil Knight, Chief
Executive Officer of Nike, Inc.; Peter Jacobsen, professional
golfer; Steve Prefontaine, track and field athlete; Edwin Artzt,
Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Procter & Gamble; Lila
Acheson Wallace, Co-founder of 'Reader's Digest'; Carolyn
Chambers, entrepreneur and philanthropist; Zollie Volchok, former
Chief Executive Officer of the Seattle SuperSonics; Harry
Glickman, President Emeritus of the Portland Trail Blazers; the
Honorable Ryan Deckert; the Honorable W. Randy Miller; the
Honorable David H. Nelson; former Governor Neil Goldschmidt;
former Governor Vic Atiyeh; Thomas E. Autzen; and Norm Van
Brocklin; now, therefore,
Be It Resolved by the Legislative Assembly of the State of
  Oregon:
  That we, the members of the Seventy-first Legislative Assembly,
congratulate and commend the fraternity and sorority system at
the University of Oregon for 100 years of leadership,
scholarship, friendship and philanthropy to the university, the
state and our nation.
