  Whereas Dr. Paul Olum died January 19, 2001, at 82 years of
age; and
  Whereas Dr. Paul Olum worked as a physicist for the Manhattan
Project, helping to develop the first atomic bomb; and
  Whereas Dr. Paul Olum earned a Ph.D. in mathematics from
Harvard University in 1947; and
  Whereas Dr. Paul Olum was active in supporting workers' rights
at Harvard University; and
  Whereas Dr. Paul Olum taught mathematics for 25 years at
Cornell University; and
  Whereas Dr. Paul Olum was instrumental in establishing a
women's studies program at Cornell University; and
  Whereas Dr. Paul Olum served as the 13th President of the
University of Oregon from 1980 to 1989; and
  Whereas Dr. Paul Olum worked tirelessly to preserve
professional schools and departments at the University of Oregon
amid an economic recession and severe budget cuts; and
  Whereas Dr. Paul Olum was instrumental in building Willamette
Hall, Deschutes Hall, Cascade Hall and Streisinger Hall at the
University of Oregon; and
  Whereas Dr. Paul Olum provided his full support for the
University of Oregon's students in their fight against South
African apartheid; and
  Whereas Dr. Paul Olum was instrumental in circulating a
petition among international scientists to end nuclear
proliferation; and
  Whereas Dr. Paul Olum was known as a man of keen intelligence
and unflinching integrity; and
  Whereas Dr. Paul Olum is remembered as one of the giants in the
evolution and development of the University of Oregon; now,
therefore,
 
Be It Resolved by the Legislative Assembly of the State of
  Oregon:
 
  That we, the members of the Seventy-first Legislative Assembly,
mourn the passing of Dr. Paul Olum, extend our condolences to his
family and express our sincere appreciation for a man who lived a
remarkable life and touched the lives of many; and be it further
  Resolved, That a copy of this resolution be presented to Dr.
Paul Olum's children, Ken Olum and Joyce Galaski.
