Whereas in the early hours of the morning on Sunday, June 25,
1950, tens of thousands of North Korean soldiers crossed the
border between North and South Korea, starting a war that lasted
three years and took over 5 million lives; and
Whereas the United Nations condemned this act of aggression and
the United States led 20 western nations, fighting under the
aegis and flag of the United Nations, to the aid of South Korea;
and
Whereas in the years that followed, 5.7 million Americans
served in uniform during the Korean War; and
Whereas 36,940 American soldiers were killed in the war,
103,284 were wounded, at least 7,000 were taken as prisoners of
war and 8,177 are still unaccounted for almost 50 years later;
and
Whereas of the approximately 19,000 Oregonians who served in
the theater of operations, 706 were wounded, 276 were killed in
action, 62 died as prisoners of war, and 61 are still missing in
action; and
Whereas coming on the heels of World War II, the Korean War was
overshadowed by that war, and through the years has become known
as the Forgotten War, and the sacrifices and heroics of many who
served and died are now largely forgotten; and
Whereas the Oregon Korean War Memorial in Wilsonville, Oregon,
honors those Oregonians who lost their lives in the Korean War
and is dedicated to the men and women from all nations who served
in the military during the Korean War and to the South Korean
people who suffered the ravages of war; now, therefore,
Be It Resolved by the Legislative Assembly of the State of
Oregon:
That we, the members of the Seventy-first Legislative Assembly,
recognize, honor and thank those Oregonians who served in the
Korean War, especially those men and women who lost their lives
or are still missing in action; and be it further
Resolved, That we, the members of the Seventy-first Legislative
Assembly, recognize the sacrifice made by the family members of
those Oregonians who served in the Korean War, especially the
family members of those men and women who lost their lives or are
still missing in action.
