JOINT MEMORIAL
To the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States
of America, in Congress assembled:
We, your memorialists, the Seventy-first Legislative Assembly
of the State of Oregon, in legislative session assembled,
respectfully represent as follows:
Whereas genetically engineered foods have not been proven safe
and are not tested by any federal agency; and
Whereas numerous bioengineers and scientists have stated that
the technology of genetically engineered foods is clearly
different from traditional technologies used in food production
and could lead to a host of undesirable health and environmental
problems; and
Whereas it is essential that the public know and understand how
food is produced and the possible health and environmental risks
of such production; and
Whereas public opinion polls show that the vast majority of
Americans want labeling of genetically engineered foods; and
Whereas legislation requiring the mandatory labeling of
genetically engineered foods has been passed in 15 European Union
countries and in Japan, Australia and New Zealand; now,
therefore,
Be It Resolved by the Legislative Assembly of the State of
Oregon:
That the Congress of the United States is respectfully urged to
pass federal legislation providing for a study analyzing the
safety of genetically engineered foods; and be it further
Resolved, That the Congress of the United States is
respectfully urged to pass federal legislation requiring the
labeling of genetically engineered foods, which are considered
dangerous for human consumption; and be it further
Resolved, That a copy of this memorial shall be sent to each
member of the Oregon Congressional Delegation.
