71st OREGON LEGISLATIVE ASSEMBLY--2001 Regular Session
Enrolled
House Joint Resolution 24
Sponsored by Representative MARCH; Representative WITT
Whereas each year 30,000 people in the United States are
diagnosed with diseases for which stem cell transplants can be a
cure, and only 30 percent of the people will find a matching
donor within their family; and
Whereas there is a critical need for persons of color on the
National Marrow Donor Program Registry; and
Whereas joining the National Marrow Donor Program Registry is
easy: After making a commitment to save another person's life,
the registrant provides informed consent and donates a small
blood sample, which the National Marrow Donor Program types and
then adds to its computerized registry; and
Whereas on February 10, 2001, the National Marrow Donor Program
and The Marrow Foundation will join with other health
organizations, including the United States Department of Health
and Human Services, in America's largest one-day donation event;
and
Whereas the lack of a matching donor affects Oregonians,
especially persons of color; and
Whereas Ioanna Miller, a 20-year-old honors student at Portland
State University, suffers from leukemia, which a transplant from
a perfect match donor could help defeat; and
Whereas Ioanna Miller's Korean-American heritage makes finding
a perfect match donor difficult; now, therefore,
Be It Resolved by the Legislative Assembly of the State of
Oregon:
That we, the members of the Seventy-first Legislative Assembly,
encourage Oregonians, particularly persons of color, to
participate in National Donor Day, February 10, 2001, and to join
the National Marrow Donor Program; and be it further
Resolved, That a copy of this resolution be presented to Ioanna
Miller as an expression of our hope that she finds the perfect
match donor that she seeks.
