                             SUMMARY
 
The following summary is not prepared by the sponsors of the
measure and is not a part of the body thereof subject to
consideration by the Legislative Assembly. It is an editor's
brief statement of the essential features of the measure as
introduced.
 
  Requires school district boards to adopt Eddie Eagle Gun Safety
Program for students in kindergarten through grade six.  Requires
public schools that discontinue Eddie Eagle Gun Safety Program to
implement other approved firearm safety education program.
 
                        A BILL FOR AN ACT
Relating to firearm safety education programs.
Be It Enacted by the People of the State of Oregon:
  SECTION 1.  { + (1) School district boards shall adopt the
Eddie Eagle Gun Safety Program existing on the effective date of
this 2001 Act for children enrolled in public schools in
kindergarten through grade six.
  (2) School district boards may:
  (a) Discontinue use of the Eddie Eagle Gun Safety Program if
the program becomes unavailable.
  (b) Adopt changes made to the Eddie Eagle Gun Safety Program
after the effective date of this 2001 Act. However, a school
district board may discontinue use of the program if any change
that actively promotes firearm ownership is made to the
curriculum of the program.
  (3) Any school district board that discontinues use of the
Eddie Eagle Gun Safety Program under subsection (2) of this
section shall acquire and implement a firearm safety education
program approved by a national or state organization with a
technical expertise in firearms and an extensive history of
teaching firearm safety for children enrolled in public schools
in kindergarten through grade six. The firearm safety education
program described in this subsection shall not encourage or
discourage firearm ownership, but shall educate children in
kindergarten through grade six on the proper action to take if
they discover a firearm in an unsupervised situation. + }
