                      SENATE AMENDMENTS TO
                         SENATE BILL 746

  Delete lines 4 through 15 of the printed bill and insert:
  '  { +  SECTION 1. + }  { + A school district may display an
object or document containing the words of the Ten Commandments
in a public school classroom or public school building, or at any
public school event, if the object or document is displayed with
other objects and documents of historical significance as part of
a Foundations of American Law and Government display as described
in section 2 of this 2001 Act. A display of an object or document
containing the words of the Ten Commandments:
  ' (1) Shall be made in the same manner and appearance generally
as the other objects and documents;
  ' (2) Shall be provided for the primary secular purpose of
promoting a better overall understanding of the historical
founding of the United States; and
  ' (3) May not be presented or displayed in any fashion that
results in calling attention to the words of the Ten Commandments
apart from the other displayed objects and documents. + }
  '  { +  SECTION 2. + }  { + A school district may display in a
public school classroom or public school building, or at any
public school event, a Foundations of American Law and Government
display that includes objects and documents that have formed or
influenced the legal and governmental systems of the United
States and the State of Oregon such as:
  ' (1) The Preamble to the United States Constitution;
  ' (2) The Declaration of Independence;
  ' (3) The Magna Carta;
  ' (4) The Justinian Code; and
  ' (5) The Ten Commandments. + } ' .
