request of University of Oregon)
Whereas by virtue of an Act of Congress, passed February 14,
1859, entitled 'An Act for the admission of the State of Oregon
into the Union,' Congress donated 72 sections of land to the
state for the use and support of a state university; and
Whereas the Seventh Legislative Assembly of the State of Oregon
approved on October 19, 1872, an Act creating a state university
permanently located at Eugene City to provide instruction and
complete education in all the departments of science, literature,
professional pursuits and general education; and
Whereas the Legislative Assembly of the State of Oregon, on
October 21, 1876, passed an Act providing for the organization of
the University of Oregon; and
Whereas October 16, 2001, marks the 125th anniversary of the
campus admitting its first class of students; and
Whereas today the University of Oregon, home of the Oregon
Ducks, serves more than 17,500 students, has nearly 1,500 faculty
members and more than 60 buildings located on 280 acres in
Eugene, and has programs and facilities throughout the state; and
Whereas for 125 years, the University of Oregon has made a
significant and positive social, cultural and economic impact on
our state, nation and world; and
Whereas the University of Oregon is the Association of American
Universities flagship institution in Oregon and has earned a
stellar reputation for the stature of its academic programs, the
success of its graduates, its ability to attract top students and
faculty members, and the academic role it plays statewide,
nationally and internationally; now, therefore,
Be It Resolved by the Legislative Assembly of the State of
Oregon:
That we, the members of the Seventy-first Legislative Assembly,
acknowledge the 125th anniversary of the University of Oregon,
known internationally as a leading research university, and
congratulate the University of Oregon on this important
milestone. Go Ducks!
