SUMMARY

In memoriam: Loeta Gies, 1922-1999.
CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
Whereas Loeta Gies died March 17, 1999, at 76 years of age; and
Whereas Loeta Gies entered Oregon State College (now known as
Oregon State University) at 15 years of age and earned a
bachelor's degree in Secretarial Science at 19 years of age, at
the time the youngest female graduate in the history of the
college; and
Whereas Loeta Gies was always interested in politics and was
head of the Polk County Republican Party in the early 1960s; and
Whereas in 1963 Loeta Gies ran for the office of Polk County
Commissioner, the first woman to do so; and
Whereas following the death of her husband, Parker Gies, in
1964 she went to work for the Senate at the request of Senator
Harry Boivin; and
Whereas, over a twenty-year career at the Capitol, Loeta Gies
worked as Senate doorkeeper, assistant to Senator Harry Boivin
and secretary to Director of Agriculture Irvin Mann, Jr.; and
Whereas Loeta Gies worked for Clay Myers, who was Secretary of
State and then State Treasurer, and retired as executive
assistant to the State Treasurer when Clay Myers left office in
1984; and
Whereas in retirement she became a master gardener, chaired the
board for the Salem Theater of the Performing Arts and served on
the board of Salem Self Help, an organization started by former
Governor Robert W. Straub to produce low-income housing; and
Whereas Loeta Gies never completely retired from politics,
working each legislative session for state Senators such as
C.T. (Cub) Houck, Ron Grensky and Neil Bryant; and
Whereas following a debilitating stroke, Loeta Gies pushed
herself hard in her physical therapy; and
Whereas her grace and optimism prevailed throughout her
remarkable life; and
Whereas Loeta Gies was famous for her sense of humor and wit
and was a great teller of jokes with an impeccable delivery and
contagious laugh impossible to resist; and
Whereas her laugh has been described as truly genuine and an
inarticulate expression of joy; and
Whereas she was known for her love of music and knew and sang
hundreds of songs, bringing music into the lives of her friends
and family; and
Whereas her religious faith was a source of strength to her in
times of adversity and a source of appreciation and gratitude
throughout her life; now, therefore,
Be It Resolved by the Legislative Assembly of the State of
Oregon:
That we, the members of the Seventy-first Legislative Assembly,
mourn the passing of Loeta Gies, extend our condolences to her
family and express our sincere appreciation for a woman who lived
a remarkable life and touched the lives of many; and be it
further
Resolved, That a copy of this resolution be presented to Loeta
Gies' children, Martha, Michael and Julia; and be it further
Resolved, That a copy of this resolution be presented to Eugene
Carson, Hope Nakagawa and Jess Carson, the husband and children
of Loeta Gies' daughter Toni, who has passed on.
