                             SUMMARY

brief statement of the essential features of the measure as
introduced.
 
  In memoriam: Former Ambassador Alan (Punch) Green, Jr., 1925 -
2001.
 
                        SENATE RESOLUTION
  Whereas former ambassador Alan (Punch) Green, Jr., died March
23, 2001, at 75 years of age; and
  Whereas Punch Green attended Lincoln High School in Portland,
where he served as student body president; and
  Whereas Punch Green willingly risked his life as a member of
the United States Army during World War II, serving with
distinction in the Pacific theater; and
  Whereas, upon return from military service, Punch Green founded
and ran a number of businesses, earning a reputation as a caring
and fair manager; and
  Whereas Punch Green loved his home city, Portland, and because
he understood the importance of the city's remaining true to its
name, served as a commissioner and president of the Port of
Portland and as chair of the Federal Maritime Commission; and
  Whereas Punch Green served as a trusted friend and mentor to
countless candidates for public office, including Governors Tom
McCall and Victor Atiyeh and United States Senator Gordon Smith;
and
  Whereas Punch Green was named Oregon Republican of the Year in
1988; and
  Whereas former President George Bush appointed Punch Green
United States Ambassador to Romania in 1989, where he served
during the revolution that overthrew the Communist government,
helping to evacuate women and children from the violence that
surrounded the United States embassy; and
  Whereas Punch Green earned the United States Department of
State's Distinguished Honor Award for his service as ambassador;
and
  Whereas after concluding his service to his country, Punch
Green continued his efforts to improve his community, state and
country, including serving on the board of trustees of the George
Bush Presidential Library Center Foundation and boards of
directors of the Council of American Ambassadors, the Columbia
River Maritime Museum and the Good Samaritan Hospital Foundation,
and assisting the Oregon Humane Society to obtain its beautiful
new facility; and
 
  Whereas Lewis and Clark College granted Punch Green its
prestigious Aubrey R. Watzek Award; and
  Whereas Punch Green was known for his honesty and compassion;
now, therefore,
Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of Oregon:
  That we, the members of the Senate of the Seventy-first
Legislative Assembly, mourn the passing of former ambassador Alan
(Punch) Green, Jr., extend our condolences to his family and
express our sincere appreciation for a person who worked
tirelessly to better his community, state and country; and be it
further
  Resolved, That copies of this resolution be presented to Punch
Green's wife Joan and his children Carter Peterson, Kelsey Grout
and Ladd Mengel, as an expression of the esteem in which we hold
the memory of our late friend.
