House Joint Resolution 48

Whereas the State Workforce Investment Board has found that there is an acute shortage of registered nurses in Oregon and has established the goal of doubling enrollment in nursing education programs by 2004; and

Whereas Oregon faces profound health care provider shortages that jeopardize patient care and health care delivery; and

Whereas an increased commitment to the health care provider professions will fuel additional economic growth at a time when Oregon has one of the highest unemployment rates in the country; and

Whereas the Governor may reserve a portion of the federal funds received by Oregon under the federal Workforce Investment Act of 1998 and use those funds for statewide employment and training activities; now, therefore,

Be It Resolved by the Legislative Assembly of the State of Oregon:

That we, the members of the Seventy-second Legislative Assembly, urge the Governor of the State of Oregon to allocate one percent of the moneys reserved by the Governor under the federal Workforce Investment Act of 1998 to provide training for health care providers.
