  Whereas March is National Women's History Month; and
  Whereas on September 25, 2002, the United States Congress
resolved that 'the Congress recognizes and commends Mary Baker
Eddy for her outstanding achievements and contributions,
particularly her contributions to the advancement of women's
rights as a public figure and role model in the early stages of
the women's rights movement'; and
  Whereas in 1821, near Concord, New Hampshire, Mary Morse Baker
was born into a devoutly religious family; and
  Whereas Mary Baker was chronically ill, widowed, a single
mother, with no property to call her own; and
  Whereas Mary Baker Eddy became a pioneer in the field of
holistic medicine and prayer-based healing; and
  Whereas Mary Baker Eddy authored a seminal work on spirituality
and healing, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures; and
  Whereas Don Wilson, former United States archivist, has stated
that 'Mary Baker Eddy is regarded by those who are familiar with
her as one of the most important women in U. S.  religious
history. . . . Clearly, she was a woman well ahead of her
time. . . . Her struggle to have her ideas taken seriously in the
male-dominated world of the late 19th century serves as a model
for women today'; and
  Whereas Mary Baker Eddy achieved international prominence
during her lifetime as the founder of Christian Science and was
the first woman in the United States to found and lead a religion
that became an international movement with members in 139
countries; and
  Whereas Mary Baker Eddy also established The Christian Science
Monitor in 1908, winner of seven Pulitzer Prizes; and
  Whereas the Mary Baker Eddy Library for the Betterment of
Humanity officially opened on September 29, 2002, in Boston,
Massachusetts, making available to the public the Mary Baker Eddy
Collections, one of the largest collections of primary source
material by and about an American woman; and
  Whereas in 1992, the Women's National Book Association voted
Mary Baker Eddy's primary work, Science and Health with Key to
the Scriptures, as one of '75 books by women whose words have
changed the world'; and
  Whereas in 1998, the Public Broadcasting Service's Religion and
Ethics Newsweekly named Mary Baker Eddy one of the '25 most
influential religious figures of the 20th Century'; and
  Whereas when inducting Mary Baker Eddy in 1995, the National
Women's Hall of Fame concluded that she made an 'indelible mark
on society, religion and journalism'; and
  Whereas in 1999, the National Foundation for Women Legislators
recognized Mary Baker Eddy with the presentation of a media award
'for her contribution to fair and balanced journalism'; now,
therefore,

Be It Resolved by the Legislative Assembly of the State of
  Oregon:
 
  That we, the members of the Seventy-second Legislative
Assembly, honor the life accomplishments of Mary Baker Eddy
during National Women's History Month, March 2003, for the help
and inspiration her accomplishments have been to thousands of
Oregonians.
