Whereas former member of the Oregon House of Representatives
Paul Earnest Walden died March 28, 2003, at 85 years of age; and
Whereas Paul Walden's ancestors came to the Oregon Territory by
wagon train in 1845; and
Whereas Paul Walden grew up in Milton-Freewater; and
Whereas Paul Walden spent 48 years in radio broadcasting,
including many years at Hood River's KIHR, which he owned and
operated; and
Whereas the Oregon Association of Broadcasters twice selected
Paul Walden as the association's president; and
Whereas the people of the City of The Dalles selected Paul
Walden as First Citizen in 1956; and
Whereas Paul Walden was active in many community and fraternal
organizations, serving as president of Kiwanis and the Chamber of
Commerce in The Dalles and as Exalted Ruler of the Hood River
Elks Lodge; and
Whereas Paul Walden served for a half century as lay reader in
the Episcopal Church and, for two years, as chairman of the
Eastern Oregon Diocesan Council; and
Whereas Paul Walden served as chairman of The Dalles Dam
dedication committee and was master of ceremonies at the
dedication, which featured Vice President Richard M. Nixon; and
Whereas Paul Walden represented citizens of Hood River, Wasco
and Clackamas Counties in the House of Representatives from 1971
to 1977; now, therefore,
Be It Resolved by the Legislative Assembly of the State of
Oregon:
That we, the members of the Seventy-second Legislative
Assembly, mourn the passing of former state Representative Paul
Earnest Walden, extend our condolences to his family and express
our sincere appreciation for a person who served his community
and state with honor, with humor and with insight; and be it
further
Resolved, That a copy of this resolution be presented to Paul
Walden's children, Bob, Bill and Greg, and stepchildren, Mike, Jo
Ann and Barb, as an expression of the esteem in which we hold the
memory of our late colleague.
