  Honors Katie Marie Harman, Miss America 2002, for service to
state and country.
 
                      CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
  Whereas Katie Marie Harman is a native Oregonian, born and
raised in Gresham; and
  Whereas Katie Marie Harman served as Miss Oregon 2001; and
  Whereas Katie Marie Harman served as Miss America 2002,
becoming the first woman from the Pacific Northwest to hold this
title; and
  Whereas the role of Miss America is a leadership position for
young women, providing them with personal and professional
opportunities, and a forum for today's young women to express
their viewpoints, talents and accomplishments; and
  Whereas Katie Marie Harman was crowned Miss America shortly
after the tragic events of September 11, 2001; and
  Whereas during her reign as Miss America, Katie Marie Harman
showed leadership on the national level, helping the citizens of
this country cope with the shock of the attack on America on
September 11, 2001; and
  Whereas through her position as Miss America, Katie Marie
Harman has focused attention on breast cancer awareness,
promoting the importance of breast cancer research and support
for a cure to breast cancer; and
  Whereas Katie Marie Harman has distinguished herself through
her gift of music, celebrating this country, providing compassion
to grieving families and entertaining millions of people; and
  Whereas Katie Marie Harman has distinguished herself by setting
an example for the young women of this country through her
services as Miss America and as a former Miss America; now,
therefore,
Be It Resolved by the Legislative Assembly of the State of
  Oregon:
  That we, the members of the Seventy-second Legislative
Assembly, express our appreciation to Katie Marie Harman and
honor her for the many contributions she has made to this state
and to her family, friends, community and country.
