                 House Concurrent Resolution 11

  Whereas former member of the Oregon House of Representatives
and the United States House of Representatives John R. Dellenback
died December 7, 2002, at 84 years of age; and
  Whereas John R. Dellenback, although born and raised in
Chicago, moved to Oregon in 1948 with his wife, Mary Jane, to
practice law and to raise his family, and became a devoted,
enthusiastic Oregonian; and
  Whereas John R. Dellenback served the people of Oregon as state
Representative from Jackson County from 1961 to 1967; and
  Whereas John R. Dellenback was elected to the United States
House of Representatives in 1966 and served with distinction as a
member of Congress from 1967 to 1975; and
  Whereas John R. Dellenback, as a member of Congress, authored
and championed legislation for the benefit of Oregonians, such as
the bill establishing the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area;
and
  Whereas John R. Dellenback, as a member of Congress, repeatedly
praised not only Oregon, but also the Oregon legislative system;
and
  Whereas John R. Dellenback continued his distinguished public
service as Peace Corps Director from 1975 to 1977, and as an
active advisor for the National Peace Corps Association; and
  Whereas John R. Dellenback continued his lifelong advocacy for
education as President of the Council for Christian Colleges and
Universities, then known as the Christian College Coalition, from
1977 to 1988; and
  Whereas, after his retirement, John R. Dellenback returned to
Medford with his wife, Mary Jane, and the two actively continued
serving their community; and
  Whereas colleagues and constituents knew John R. Dellenback as
a good listener and reconciler and as an independent thinker with
steady emotions and an appetite for hard work; and
  Whereas throughout his career, John R. Dellenback exemplified
high standards of judiciousness, statesmanship and compassion for
all people; now, therefore,
 
Be It Resolved by the Legislative Assembly of the State of
  Oregon:
 
  That we, the members of the Seventy-second Legislative
Assembly, mourn the passing of former state Representative and
United States Representative John R. Dellenback, extend our
condolences to his family and express our appreciation for his
long and exemplary service to his community, his state and his
country; and be it further
  Resolved, That a copy of this resolution be presented to our
late colleague's wife, Mary Jane, his children, Richard, David
and Barbara, and his grandchildren, Jess Martinetti, Van
Dellenback-Ouellette and Cy Dellenback-Ouellette, as an

expression of the esteem in which we hold the memory of John R.
Dellenback.
