Whereas the State of Oregon has a close cultural and economic
relationship with the Canadian Province of British Columbia; and
Whereas this close relationship has been further developed by
working together on world-class civic events like the 1986
World's Fair in Vancouver, British Columbia, and sharing the
economic benefits of such world-class events; and
Whereas the State of Oregon and the Province of British
Columbia are members of the Pacific NorthWest Economic Region,
which represents the 11th largest economy in the world; and
Whereas the 2002 Winter Olympic Games in Salt Lake City, Utah,
generated over $1 billion in revenue and spending in the western
United States; and
Whereas the Pacific Northwest region has numerous public
facilities appropriate for world-class events; and
Whereas the entire Pacific Northwest region, in particular its
tourism industry, emerging industries and small businesses, will
benefit from an estimated $6 billion worth of worldwide media
attention; and
Whereas economic benefits accrue in excess of 10 years, on a
continuing basis, from increased tourism; now, therefore,
Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of
Oregon:
That we, the members of the House of Representatives of the
Seventy-second Legislative Assembly, respectfully declare our
support for the efforts of the city of Vancouver, British
Columbia, to be selected to host the 2010 Winter Olympic Games;
and be it further
Resolved, That a copy of this resolution be immediately
transmitted to the International Olympic Committee, the United
States Olympic Committee, the Vancouver 2010 Bid Corporation, the
Prime Minister of Canada and the Premier of British Columbia.
