72nd OREGON LEGISLATIVE ASSEMBLY--2003 Regular Session
Enrolled
Senate Concurrent Resolution 1
Sponsored by Senator COURTNEY (at the request of Members of the
House of Representatives and the Senate)
Whereas on February 1, 2003, the United States of America and
the world suffered the tragedy of the loss of the crew of the
Space Shuttle Columbia; and
Whereas Columbia's mission was dedicated to research in the
physical, life and space sciences in an effort to advance the
health and safety of all peoples; and
Whereas because the State of Oregon was founded by those who
answered the special calling to explore, the dedication and
devotion of the Columbia crew to the exploration of space was an
inspiration to all Oregonians; and
Whereas the story of the Columbia, like the story of the
Challenger before it, is the story of pioneers who took wing; and
Whereas the motto of this state, bestowed by pioneers, is ' She
Flies With Her Own Wings'; and
Whereas the following Columbia astronauts died for their
country and the cause of humankind:
Commander Rick D. Husband, colonel, U.S. Air Force;
Pilot William C. McCool, commander, U.S. Navy;
Payload Commander Michael P. Anderson, lieutenant colonel,
U.S. Air Force;
Mission Specialist 1 David M. Brown, captain, U.S. Navy;
Mission Specialist 2 Kalpana Chawla, aerospace engineer;
Mission Specialist 4 Laurel Blair Salton Clark, commander
(captain-select), U.S. Navy;
Payload Specialist 1 Ilan Ramon, colonel, Israeli Air Force;
and
Whereas these brave pioneers brought closer not only the space
beyond our planet, but also races, ethnicities and nations; now,
therefore,
Be It Resolved by the Legislative Assembly of the State of
Oregon:
That we, the members of the Seventy-second Legislative Assembly
of the State of Oregon, mourn the loss of the crew of the Space
Shuttle Columbia, extend our condolences to the families of the
crew and express our sincere appreciation and gratitude for the
crew's bravery, devotion and idealism; and be it further
Resolved, That we rededicate ourselves to the exemplary human
qualities that the crew displayed so that their lives will be
neither forgotten nor in vain; and be it further
Resolved, That copies of this resolution be sent to the
National Aeronautics and Space Administration for presentation to
the families of the crew, as an expression of the esteem in which
we hold the memory of the astronauts of the Space Shuttle
Columbia.
