In memoriam: Charles Britton (Maxey) Maxey, 1917-2001.
CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
Whereas Charles Britton (Maxey) Maxey was born on February 13,
1917, to Robert and Virgie Maxey in San Augustine, Texas; and
Whereas Charles Maxey graduated from Texas College with dual
degrees in Economics and Secondary Education; and
Whereas Charles Maxey married his Kappa Alpha Psi sweetheart,
Johnnie Obina Sample, on October 15, 1939; and
Whereas Charles Maxey moved his family to Portland, Oregon, in
1942; and
Whereas Charles and Johnnie Maxey raised five children in
Portland; and
Whereas Charles Maxey was the first African-American to attend
the Young National Republican Convention; and
Whereas Charles and Johnnie Maxey, acting with an
entrepreneurial spirit, owned and operated several businesses,
including the Maxey Better Buy Grocery Store, the Maxey
Barbershop, a dry cleaner and an appliance store; and
Whereas Charles Maxey served as an Oregon Liquor Control
Commission agent; and
Whereas Charles Maxey was a community leader and activist on
issues ranging from politics to social justice and
discrimination; and
Whereas Charles Maxey was an advocate for justice and equal
opportunity; and
Whereas Charles Maxey was an African-American community leader
supporting equal opportunity in all fields; and
Whereas Charles Maxey was a member of and a significant
participant in and contributor to the following organizations:
Bethel A.M.E. Church, National Association for the Advancement of
Colored People (NAACP), Urban League, Young Republican Party,
Parent Teachers Association (PTA), Jefferson and Benson High
School Dad's Club, Leisure Hour Golf Club, Texas Social Club,
Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Little League, Connie Mack Baseball
and Barbershop Connection; and
Whereas Charles Maxey received the honorary Freedom Award
Citation from the NAACP; and
Whereas Charles Maxey received the Emerald Award for Lifetime
Achievement from the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority; and
Whereas Charles Maxey received the Entrepreneurial Award from
the State of Oregon; and
Whereas Charles Maxey was a member of the African American
Advisory Board to the Chief of Police of the Portland Police
Bureau; and
Whereas Charles Maxey was a member of the Labor and Industry
Committee of the NAACP; and
Whereas Charles Maxey received a Certificate of Recognition
from Benson High School; and
Whereas Charles Maxey received the Real Father of the Community
Award from the Barbershop Connection; and
Whereas Charles Maxey received the Distinguished Citizen Award
from the Zeta Sigma Omega Chapter of the Kappa Alpha Psi
Fraternity; and
Whereas Charles Maxey was a founding father of every chapter of
Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity in the State of Oregon; and
Whereas Charles Maxey touched many lives with his unselfish
generosity and caring personality; and
Whereas upon the death of Charles Maxey on July 29, 2001, the
State of Oregon lost a heroic member of the community; now,
therefore,
Be It Resolved by the Legislative Assembly of the State of
Oregon:
That the State of Oregon recognizes and commends Charles
Britton (Maxey) Maxey for his lifetime of contributions to the
people of the State of Oregon and of the nation; and be it
further
Resolved, That a copy of this resolution be presented to his
wife, Johnnie, his sons, Charles and Jonathan, and his daughters,
Gahlena (Carol), Virginia and Donna.
