Whereas all American presidents affect the history of the State
of Oregon, but President Gerald Rudolph Ford leaves a legacy of
leadership and service that will endure for years to come; and
Whereas millions of men and women across Oregon mourn the death
of Gerald R. Ford, the 38th President of the United States; and
Whereas from 1965 to 1973, Gerald R. Ford served as minority
leader of the United States House of Representatives; and
Whereas from 1974 to 1977, Gerald R. Ford served as the 38th
President of the United States, taking office at a dark hour in
the history of the United States and returning the faith of the
people of our state and our nation in the presidency through his
wisdom, courage and integrity; and
Whereas Gerald R. Ford visited Oregon on four separate
occasions during his two and a half years as president and made
at least two post-presidential trips to Oregon; and
Whereas during the 1976 primary election, Oregonians chose
Gerald R. Ford to receive the Republican nomination for
president; and
Whereas in the 1976 general election, Oregonians chose him to
lead the nation by casting their six electoral college votes for
Gerald R. Ford; and
Whereas Gerald R. Ford significantly influenced the lives and
political careers of some of Oregon's finest statesmen, including
former Governor Tom McCall, former Governor Vic Atiyeh and former
United States Senator Bob Packwood, leaving a lasting legacy for
our state; and
Whereas Gerald R. Ford's life was characterized by honesty,
integrity and dedication of purpose; now, therefore,
Be It Resolved by the Legislative Assembly of the State of
Oregon:
That we, the members of the Seventy-fourth Legislative
Assembly, mourn the passing of President Gerald R. Ford, extend
our condolences to his family and express our sincere
appreciation for his honest hard work and sense of integrity; and
be it further
Resolved, That a copy of this resolution be sent to Gerald
Ford's wife, Betty, to his sons, Michael, Jack and Steven, and to
his daughter, Susan, as an expression of our esteem.
