Whereas diabetes is a chronic disease for which there is
currently no known cure and is the sixth leading cause of death
in this country; and
Whereas the serious long term implications of high blood sugar
levels caused by diabetes may include blindness, lower extremity
amputation, heart disease, kidney failure and premature death;
and
Whereas in recent years the number of individuals diagnosed
with diabetes has increased 41 percent; and
Whereas nine out of 10 adults who are newly diagnosed with
adult onset diabetes are obese; and
Whereas this country faces a diabetes epidemic because an
estimated 20.8 million Americans are living with diabetes; and
Whereas the keys to reducing the incidence of and complications
associated with diabetes are education, early detection, control
of blood sugar and proper treatment; and
Whereas the first line of recommended treatment is diet,
exercise and weight loss; now, therefore,
Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of
Oregon:
That we, the members of the House of Representatives of the
Seventy-fourth Legislative Assembly, encourage all Oregonians to
seek early screening for diabetes and encourage health care
providers to engage in aggressive programs with their diabetic
patients, including dietary counseling, instructions on proper
exercise and measurements of body weight.
