                 Senate Concurrent Resolution 8
 
Sponsored by Senators GORDLY, BROWN, WESTLUND; Senators CARTER,
  FERRIOLI, Representative DALLUM (at the request of Confederated
  Tribes of Warm Springs)
 
 
  Whereas Gladys Miller Thompson has devoted her life in service
to her fellow tribal members of the Confederated Tribes of the
Warm Springs Reservation of Oregon; and
  Whereas Gladys Thompson was born in the Tenino Valley on the
Warm Springs Indian Reservation on January 1, 1915, to Carrie
Jane John and Thomas Miller and learned  { - Kiksht - }, the
language of the Wasco people, from her Wasco father's parents,
Margaret and Tomar Handley, who raised her with a love of Native
language; and
  Whereas Gladys Thompson also became fluent in
 { - Ichishkiin - }, the  { -  Sahaptin - } language of the
Columbia Plateau spoken by her mother; and
  Whereas Gladys Thompson is currently teaching  { - Kiksht - }
to her grandchildren and to many members of the Warm Springs
Tribes and is one of three surviving fluent  { - Kiksht - }
speakers; and
  Whereas Gladys Thompson has served her people as a revered
teacher of  { - Kiksht - } in the Warm Springs Tribal Language
Program from its inception to this day, including teaching
linguists Robert Moore and Hank Millstein; and
  Whereas Gladys Thompson has served her people for over a
quarter century as a Wasco member of the Warm Springs Cultural
and Heritage Committee, and her dedication to the preservation of
Indian ways has been a source of inspiration for members of the
Confederated Tribes of the Warm Springs Reservation of Oregon and
will benefit future generations; and
  Whereas Gladys Thompson worked for passage of Senate Bill 690,
the Native language teacher certification bill, in 2001, and is
the expert responsible for certifying teachers of
 { - Kiksht - }; and
  Whereas Gladys Thompson has 26 grandchildren, 78
great-grandchildren, and 23 great-great-grandchildren, many of
whom, due to her dedication and guidance, are now faithfully
working to preserve  { - Kiksht - }, the language of the Wasco
people; now, therefore,
 
Be It Resolved by the Legislative Assembly of the State of
  Oregon:
 
  That we, the members of the Seventy-fourth Legislative
Assembly, honor the contribution of Gladys Miller Thompson to
preserve the culture of the Wasco Tribe and recognize her
significant accomplishments to ensure the survival of
 { - Kiksht - } and  { -  Ichishkiin - }, two of the great Native
languages of Oregon; and be it further
  Resolved, That a copy of this resolution be presented to Gladys
Miller Thompson and to the Tribal Council of the Confederated
Tribes of the Warm Springs Reservation of Oregon.
