  In memoriam: Abdul Halim Rahsaan, 1943-2006.
 
                      CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
  Whereas Abdul Halim Rahsaan, formerly known as William Earl
Cross, was born on May 12, 1943, and passed away on July 7, 2006;
and
  Whereas after graduating from Jefferson High School in 1961,
Abdul Halim Rahsaan enlisted in the United States Army and was
honorably discharged; and
  Whereas Abdul Halim Rahsaan attended Southern Illinois
University and Lewis and Clark College where he received numerous
certificates and honors; and
  Whereas Abdul Halim Rahsaan began boxing at the Knott Street
Community Center where his boxing team, the Knott Street Boxing
Club, won three national titles; and
  Whereas the Knott Street Boxing Club, of which Abdul Halim
Rahsaan was a member, was inducted into the Oregon Sports Hall of
Fame in 2005; and
  Whereas Abdul Halim Rahsaan counseled youth about the
importance of staying in school and pursuing higher education;
and
  Whereas Abdul Halim Rahsaan motivated young people in recovery
and in the juvenile justice system to rebuild their lives; and
  Whereas Abdul Halim Rahsaan was a leader who stood and fought
against inferior education, police brutality, housing
discrimination and unemployment; and
  Whereas Abdul Halim Rahsaan will be remembered for his melodic
singing of the black national anthem 'Lift Every Voice and Sing';
and
  Whereas Abdul Halim Rahsaan's courage, perserverance,
leadership, pride in his African heritage and love for his
community was an inspiration to many; now, therefore,
Be It Resolved by the Legislative Assembly of the State of
  Oregon:
  That we, the members of the Seventy-fourth Legislative
Assembly, express our deep condolences to the family of Abdul
Halim Rahsaan.
