brief statement of the essential features of the measure as
introduced.
 
  In memoriam: Senator George Eivers, 1914-2005.
 
                      CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
  Whereas state Senator George Eivers was a lifelong resident of
Portland, where he raised a family of nine children with his wife
of 55 years, Ruth; and
  Whereas Senator Eivers was the son of Irish immigrants who was
raised in the Lents neighborhood, a member of St. Peters Parish
and a graduate of Franklin High School; and
  Whereas Senator Eivers received his degree from Northwestern
School of Law, after which he practiced as an attorney before
entering the military at the start of World War II where he
served in the Alaska Air Command; and
  Whereas in 1949 Senator Eivers began a long and successful
career in providing geriatric and long-term care services in
Portland and Milwaukie, building and operating the Milwaukie
Convalescent Center in 1963, which continues to this day as a
respected center of the health care community; and
  Whereas Senator Eivers was elected to the Oregon Legislative
Assembly in 1966 and served proudly and energetically as Senator
for Clackamas County through 1974; and
  Whereas Senator Eivers was honored with the First Citizen Award
by the North Clackamas County Chamber of Commerce, served on the
Providence Milwaukie Hospital Board, the University of Portland
Board and the Sisters of St. Mary of Oregon Board, and chaired
the Oregon Chapter of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society
Board, along with being an active member of the Clackamas County
Welfare Committee, the Portland Traffic Safety Committee, the
Serra Club, the Knights of Columbus, the University of Portland
Discussion Club, the Milwaukie Elks Lodge, the Friends of the
Library, the Waverly Country Club and the Aero Club; and
  Whereas Senator Eivers was a devout Catholic servant who gave
generously of his time to his church community; and
  Whereas Senator Eivers loved to travel and made countless trips
across the country throughout his life with family and friends,
which often culminated in a prized Notre Dame football game; and
  Whereas Senator Eivers was known as having a quick wit and a
sharp mind and as a generous and compassionate person, who to the
 
end of his life brought laughter and sustenance to the lives of
his family and other Oregonians; now, therefore,
Be It Resolved by the Legislative Assembly of the State of
  Oregon:
  That we, the members of the Seventy-fourth Legislative
Assembly, recognize and express our appreciation for Senator
George Eivers' legacy of outstanding service and numerous
achievements on behalf of Oregonians and the State of Oregon.
