SUMMARY
The following summary is not prepared by the sponsors of the

consideration by the Legislative Assembly. It is an editor's
brief statement of the essential features of the measure as
introduced.
Honors Daniel O. Bernstine, president of Portland State
University, for his leadership of Portland State University and
his service to Oregon from 1997 to 2007.
CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
Whereas Daniel O. Bernstine is the second longest-serving
president of Portland State University, Oregon's largest and only
urban university; and
Whereas during his tenure, President Bernstine made expanding
educational opportunities a priority, increasing enrollment at
Portland State University from 14,000 to more than 24,000
students today; and
Whereas President Bernstine has worked with faculty and staff
to bring national recognition to Portland State University,
resulting in high rankings by The Princeton Review, the New
England Board of Higher Education and U.S. News & World Report;
and
Whereas research funding at Portland State University has grown
substantially during the last 10 years from $17 million to over
$40 million a year; and
Whereas President Bernstine led Portland State University's
first capital campaign, bringing in more than $114 million to
support student scholarships, faculty research, academic programs
and new building construction; and
Whereas President Bernstine led further development of the
University District, including the new Urban Center Plaza, the
Native American Student and Community Center, the Northwest
Center for Engineering, Science and Technology, Epler Hall and
the Broadway student housing facilities, the acquisition of
University Place, the Streetcar and, soon to arrive, the MAX
light rail line; and
Whereas President Bernstine forged collaborations and program
partnerships with Mt. Hood Community College, Portland Community
College, Clackamas Community College, Chemeketa Community College
and Clark College, making it easier for students to transfer to
Portland State University; and
Whereas President Bernstine has worked to make Portland State
University the most ethnically and culturally diverse university
in Oregon; and
Whereas President Bernstine has made internationalization of
Portland State University a cornerstone of his administration,
including supporting international scholars at the university,
forging partnerships with international universities and
expanding study abroad options for students; and
Whereas President Bernstine has led Portland State University
in affirming its commitment to sustainable operations and
integrating the principles of sustainability throughout the
curriculum; and
Whereas President Bernstine has been actively involved in the
community, serving as a board member of the United Way of the
Columbia-Willamette, the Portland Business Alliance, the Legacy
Health System and the Urban League of Portland, as well as
serving as the chair of the Urban League of Portland; and
Whereas on July 1, 2007, Daniel O. Bernstine will leave the
presidency of Portland State University to become the president
and chief executive officer of the Law School Admission Council;
now, therefore,
Be It Resolved by the Legislative Assembly of the State of
Oregon:
That we, the members of the Seventy-fourth Legislative
Assembly, commend the exemplary leadership and service of Daniel
O. Bernstine and extend best wishes to him as he leaves Portland
State University to embark on this new opportunity.
