Chapter 43 Oregon Laws 2008 Special Session

 

AN ACT

 

SB 1074

 

Relating to light rail safety; and declaring an emergency.

 

Be It Enacted by the People of the State of Oregon:

 

          SECTION 1. (1) As used in this section, “light rail system” includes light rail transit vehicles, lines, crossings, station areas and park-and-ride facilities that support passenger use.

          (2) The Tri-County Metropolitan Transportation District of Oregon shall:

          (a) Perform evaluations at least annually of criminal activity occurring on and near the light rail system and consider methods for improving the personal safety and security of light rail passengers including, but not limited to:

          (A) A gated passenger security system;

          (B) Increased use of fare inspections;

          (C) Increased use of surveillance cameras on light rail transit vehicles and at station areas; and

          (D) Increased patrols by law enforcement officers on light rail transit vehicles and at station areas;

          (b) Perform evaluations at least annually of the operational safety of the light rail system and the personal safety and security of light rail passengers from criminal activity using light rail system data that is disaggregated from the data collected from other mass transit vehicles and operations; and

          (c) Report annually to the appropriate committee or interim committee of the Legislative Assembly the results of the evaluations required by this section.

 

          SECTION 2. The Tri-County Metropolitan Transportation District of Oregon shall make the first annual report required by section 1 of this 2008 Act to the appropriate committee during the regular session of the Seventy-fifth Legislative Assembly.

 

          SECTION 3. Sections 1 and 2 of this 2008 Act are repealed on January 2, 2012.

 

          SECTION 4. This 2008 Act being necessary for the immediate preservation of the public peace, health and safety, an emergency is declared to exist, and this 2008 Act takes effect on its passage.
