House Joint Resolution 10 Oregon Laws 2009

 

AN ACT

 

          Whereas the American Legion was founded in March 1919 and chartered by Congress in September 1919 as a patriotic, war-time organization; and

          Whereas the American Legion and its nearly three million members have continually exhibited a deep sense of pride in community and have ensured a strong America by serving veterans and their families; and

          Whereas the American Legion was responsible for the original GI bill that enabled millions of veterans to obtain education and home loans; and

          Whereas the American Legion was instrumental in the passage of legislation that created the United States Department of Veterans Affairs; and

          Whereas the American Legion continues to work for an amendment to the United States Constitution to protect the American flag from desecration and mandatory funding to ensure adequate operation of Veterans Affairs medical facilities; and

          Whereas the American Legion operates a support network for families of active duty military personnel and members of the National Guard and Reserves; and

          Whereas more than 25,000 Legionnaires belonging to 120 posts across Oregon and more than 10,000 members of the Sons of the American Legion and the American Legion Auxiliary statewide volunteer thousands of hours to assist our veterans and their communities; now, therefore,

 

Be It Resolved by the Legislative Assembly of the State of Oregon:

 

          That we, the members of the Seventy-fifth Legislative Assembly, honor the service to this country of the American Legion and its members by declaring March 2009 American Legion Month.
