House Joint Resolution 40 Oregon Laws 2009
AN ACT
Whereas Dr. Jane Lubchenco has been a member of the Oregon State University faculty since 1977, holds the Wayne and Gladys Valley Professorship in Marine Biology, is a Distinguished Professor of Zoology and has contributed greatly to our knowledge of ocean ecosystems and human well-being; and
Whereas Dr. Jane Lubchenco has received numerous major international and national awards for demonstrating the importance of ecological sustainability and helping to open a larger dialogue between scientists and the public, the latter chiefly through her presidency of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and her creation of the influential Aldo Leopold Leadership Program for enhancement of communications around environmental science; and
Whereas Dr. Jane Lubchenco cochaired the Governor’s advisory group on global warming, helping to develop an Oregon strategy on climate change, and has provided other valuable leadership through two terms of presidentially appointed service on the National Science Board; and
Whereas Dr. Jane Lubchenco was confirmed by the United States Senate on March 19, 2009, as Under Secretary of Commerce for Oceans and Atmosphere and as Administrator of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration; and
Whereas the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration is the lead United States agency for the study of climate and oceans, the stewardship of coastal jobs and resources and the provision of vital weather information and services to Americans; and
Whereas Dr. Jane Lubchenco, as head of the agency, will provide vital leadership in analyzing and shaping administrative policy with regard to key components of our environment; now, therefore,
Be It Resolved by the Legislative Assembly of the State of Oregon:
That the Seventy-fifth Legislative Assembly:
(1) Recognizes and thanks Dr. Jane Lubchenco for her service to Oregon and for her valuable contributions to the science of marine biology and to our collective understanding of climate change.
(2) Wishes Dr. Jane Lubchenco well in her new roles as Under Secretary of Commerce for Oceans and Atmosphere and as Administrator of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
