In memoriam: Bryan Johnston, 1949-2008.
CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
Whereas Bryan Johnston passed away on June 7, 2008, at the age
of 59; and
Whereas Bryan Johnston, who was raised in Chicago, Illinois,
graduated from Northern Illinois University, earned a law degree
from Loyola University in Chicago and began his law career as a
Cook County public defender; and
Whereas Bryan Johnston moved to Oregon to follow his artistic
passion and became executive director of the Salem Argonauts Drum
and Bugle Corps; and
Whereas Bryan Johnston, after arriving in Salem, met and
married Anne Unger and together they raised four children, Drew,
Courtney, Zach and John; and
Whereas Bryan Johnston was known by his colleagues as a skilled
negotiator and administrator who cared deeply about higher
education and human services; and
Whereas Bryan Johnston was a founding faculty member of the
Center for Dispute Resolution at the Willamette College of Law;
and
Whereas Bryan Johnston served as interim President of
Willamette University, dean of the Atkinson Graduate School of
Management at Willamette University and associate dean of the
Willamette College of Law; and
Whereas Bryan Johnston served in the Oregon House of
Representatives, representing south Salem, from 1995 to 1999 and
acted as a mentor to future legislators and leaders of Oregon;
and
Whereas Bryan Johnston was interim Director of Human Services
and, at the time of his death, was the Director of the Children,
Adults and Families Division; and
Whereas Bryan Johnston was known in the Salem community for his
deep love of volunteerism and public service, serving on the
boards of numerous organizations; and
Whereas Bryan Johnston was known as the finest spontaneous
orator in the Oregon House of Representatives, as having a quick
wit and a sharp mind and as a generous and compassionate
gentleman, who to the end of his life brought laughter and
sustenance to his family and to Oregonians who had the privilege
of knowing him; now, therefore,
Be It Resolved by the Legislative Assembly of the State of
Oregon:
That we, the members of the Seventy-fifth Legislative Assembly,
honor and express our appreciation for Bryan Johnston's legacy of
outstanding service to this state, for his numerous achievements
and for his contributions to Oregon through his legal abilities,
his kindness and his commitment; and be it further
Resolved, That a copy of this resolution be presented to Bryan
Johnston's wife, Anne, and to his four children.
