Declares March 2009 American Legion Month.

                        JOINT RESOLUTION
Whereas the American Legion was founded in March 1919 and
chartered by Congress in September 1919 as a patriotic, war-time
organization; and
Whereas the American Legion and its nearly three million
members have continually exhibited a deep sense of pride in
community and have ensured a strong America by serving veterans
and their families; and
Whereas the American Legion was responsible for the original GI
bill that enabled millions of veterans to obtain education and
home loans; and
Whereas the American Legion was instrumental in the passage of
legislation that created the United States Department of Veterans
Affairs; and
Whereas the American Legion continues to work for an amendment
to the United States Constitution to protect the American flag
from desecration and mandatory funding to ensure adequate
operation of Veterans Affairs medical facilities; and
Whereas the American Legion operates a support network for
families of active duty military personnel and members of the
National Guard and Reserves; and
Whereas more than 25,000 Legionnaires belonging to 120 posts
across Oregon and more than 10,000 members of the Sons of the
American Legion and the American Legion Auxiliary statewide
volunteer thousands of hours to assist our veterans and their
communities; now, therefore,
Be It Resolved by the Legislative Assembly of the State of
  Oregon:
That we, the members of the Seventy-fifth Legislative Assembly,
honor the service to this country of the American Legion and its
members by declaring March 2009 American Legion Month.
