Congratulates Port of Morrow on its 50th anniversary.
HOUSE RESOLUTION
Whereas the Port of Morrow, located on the Columbia River near
Boardman, Oregon, is celebrating its 50th anniversary; and
Whereas the Port of Morrow was approved by Morrow County voters
to establish a tax base of $31,000 for the port after the Morrow
County Court lent the port $500 to establish a checking account;
and
Whereas the Port of Morrow Commission immediately began
planning for development of the John Day Pool for river
navigation and irrigation to be completed by 1968; and
Whereas the Port of Morrow in its early years began acquiring
property for port facilities, accumulating several thousand acres
for future growth; and
Whereas the Port of Morrow, after the completion of the John
Day Pool for river navigation and irrigation, welcomed the food
processing industry in 1974; and
Whereas the Port of Morrow promoted the development of energy
facilities and terminal cargo, such as grain facilities and wood
chip transload terminals; and
Whereas the Port of Morrow is continuing its energy development
with ethanol production, gas-fired power plants and plans for
cellulosic ethanol facilities; and
Whereas the Port of Morrow, in 1984, invested in container
terminals, and the container terminal has become the largest
barge terminal in the United States, moving approximately 24,000
40-foot containers annually; and
Whereas the Port of Morrow has more than 2,000 people working
at port-generated operations, creating over $1 billion in annual
gross sales and paying over 50 percent of the assessed valuation
of Morrow County property taxes; and
Whereas the Port of Morrow owes its rise from its humble
beginnings to its extremely capable and inspired past and present
leadership; now, therefore,
Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of
Oregon:
That we, the members of the House of Representatives of the
Seventy-fifth Legislative Assembly, on the occasion of the 50th
anniversary of the founding of the Port of Morrow, extend our
best wishes to the Port of Morrow and to the past and present
leadership of the port.
