Whereas James Willard Bosley was born in Great Falls, Montana,
on February 3, 1935, and passed away in Portland, Oregon, on
April 6, 2008, at the age of 73; and
Whereas James Bosley, affectionately known to his fans as ' The
Boz,' spent more than 40 years in the television broadcasting
business, beginning in Klamath Falls at KOTI-TV and then moving
to Portland in 1962 as the promotion manager for KATU-TV, Channel
2; and
Whereas James Bosley in 1966 became KATU's chief meteorologist
and on-air weather forecaster, which began his love affair with
the viewing public; and
Whereas James Bosley was well-known for his signature '1 to 10'
weather rating scale, a scale appreciated by viewers as a quick
way to determine the day's weather; and
Whereas James Bosley added talk-show host to his duties when '
AM Northwest' was created in 1975, becoming the highest rated
local talk show in the country and making 'The Boz' the most
recognizable personality in Oregon; and
Whereas James Bosley in 2000, at the age of 65, left his on-air
positions, but was asked to remain at Channel 2 as its ' Goodwill
Ambassador' for another year; and
Whereas James Bosley in 2003 received the National Television
Academy's coveted Northwest Regional Silver Circle Emmy Award, an
award given only to individuals who 'have made a significant
contribution to both their industry and the community'; and
Whereas James Bosley also worked for a Portland advertising
agency and won a prestigious award for a local bank commercial he
created; and
Whereas James Bosley was knighted by Portland's Royal Rosarians
in 1974 and was the Master of Ceremonies for many Miss Oregon
Pageants and Rose Festival Queen Coronations; and
Whereas James Bosley, in 2007, was asked to ride in the Rose
Festival's Centennial Grand Floral Parade on their 'Hundred
Person Float,' which was 'a special entry honoring Oregonians who
have influenced the festival's success'; and
Whereas James Bosley devoted much of his personal time to doing
good deeds and was honored with more than 70 awards of merit for
working with charitable and service organizations, going on
door-to-door food drives, participating in school and church
fund-raisers, working hard on the Muscular Dystrophy and
Doernbecher Hospital telethons and leading walkathons for other
good Oregon causes; and
Whereas James Bosley, after participating in several
fund-raisers for Chemeketa Community College, was presented with
its 2003 Volunteer of the Year Award; and
Whereas James Bosley, after visiting the Fiji Islands and
promoting them here in Oregon, was appointed Honorary Consul to
the Republic of Fiji by that country and the United States
Department of State; and

Whereas James Bosley, after his retirement, urged other
retirees to make a difference in their communities, sharing his
creative art-mosaic glass covered pots-and showing others how to
make the pots on programs such as 'Oregon Art Beat' and as a
guest on KATU's 'AM Northwest'; and
Whereas James Bosley brought joy and smiles everywhere he went
in Oregon, and was so deeply rooted in our state that many people
thought of him as a relative; now, therefore,
Be It Resolved by the Legislative Assembly of the State of
Oregon:
That we, the members of the Seventy-fifth Legislative Assembly,
recognize and express our appreciation for James Bosley's service
in the Oregon television industry and his legacy of commitment
and devotion to his community on behalf of all Oregonians and the
State of Oregon.
