  In memoriam: Vern Cook, 1925-2008.
 
                      CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
  Whereas Vern Cook was born Robert Vernon Cook in St. Francis,
Kansas, on October 14, 1925, and died on December 6, 2008; and
  Whereas Vern Cook and his family were forced to leave Kansas
during the Great Depression, and eventually settled in Gresham in
1937; and
  Whereas Vern Cook was a graduate of Gresham High School, Reed
College and the University of Oregon School of Law; and
  Whereas Vern Cook married Beryl Kirkwood on June 5, 1955; and
  Whereas shortly after graduating from law school, Vern Cook
opened his law office in Gresham; and
  Whereas Vern Cook and his wife Beryl raised five children in
their home in the Sandy River Canyon near Troutdale; and
  Whereas Vern Cook served in the Oregon House of Representatives
from 1957 through 1960 and in the Oregon Senate from 1961 through
1980; and
  Whereas Vern Cook's significant legislative accomplishments
included increasing state funding for schools, voter registration
reform and land use legislation; and
  Whereas Vern Cook served on the boards or governing bodies of
numerous civic and community organizations throughout more than
50 years of public service to the people of Gresham and to all
Oregonians; now, therefore,
Be It Resolved by the Legislative Assembly of the State of
  Oregon:
  That we, the members of the Seventy-fifth Legislative Assembly,
express our gratitude for Vern Cook's decades of public service
to the Legislative Assembly and to all Oregonians, and extend our
condolences to Vern Cook's wife, Beryl, and their children and
grandchildren; and be it further
  Resolved, That a copy of this resolution be sent to Vern Cook's
wife, Beryl, and to their children Robert Jr., Randal, David,
Marc and Patricia.
