Whereas James Klonoski was born on March 24, 1925, in the small
'Iron Range' town of Virginia in northern Minnesota and passed
away on January 30, 2009, in Springfield, Oregon, at the age of
83; and
Whereas James Klonoski served as a private in the United States
Army during World War II in Korea and taught civics as a sergeant
to deploying soldiers during the Korean conflict; and
Whereas James Klonoski earned a bachelor's degree and a
master's degree from the University of Minnesota and a doctor of
philosophy degree from the University of Michigan; and
Whereas James Klonoski was a professor of political science at
the University of Oregon beginning in 1961 and continuing until
his retirement in 1997; and
Whereas James Klonoski served as a professor emeritus at the
University of Oregon from 1999 to 2002; and
Whereas James Klonoski's teaching shaped the political
discourse for tens of thousands of Oregonians by challenging
students' minds and stirring their hearts, including some who
serve in the Legislative Assembly today; and
Whereas James Klonoski's role as an active citizen included
serving as the chairman of the Lane County Democratic Party from
1970 to 1974 and the Oregon Democratic Party from 1974 to 1980;
and
Whereas James Klonoski helped to pioneer the political tax
credit in Oregon; and
Whereas James Klonoski served on the Lane County Fair Board,
where he led the community in the construction of the Lane County
Ice Center; and
Whereas James Klonoski served on the Oregon State Fair Board;
and
Whereas James Klonoski loved, supported and mentored his wife
of 30 years, Ann Aiken, the first woman to serve as chief judge
for Oregon's United States District Court; and
Whereas James Klonoski supported and raised his eight children,
Kevin, Tom, Katherine, Jake, Nick, Zach, Sam and Chris to share
his unshakable commitment to serve the public good; and
Whereas James Klonoski, a member of the Greatest Generation,
believed in the power of an informed and active citizenry to
remake society and that politics properly understood excites us
because of its lasting impact on the lives of people, nations and
the world; now, therefore,
Be It Resolved by the Legislative Assembly of the State of
Oregon:
That we, the members of the Seventy-fifth Legislative Assembly,
express our condolences to James Klonoski's family and honor and
Enrolled Senate Concurrent Resolution 11 (SCR 11-A) Page 1
express our appreciation for James Klonoski's legacy of
outstanding service, for his devotion to his community and for
his contributions to Oregon; and be it further
Resolved, That a copy of this resolution be presented to James
Klonoski's wife, Ann, and to his eight children.
