In memoriam: Thomas Paul Tennant, 1957-2008.
CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
Whereas Thomas Paul Tennant was born in Prineville, Oregon, on
February 20, 1957, and was killed in the line of duty on December
12, 2008, as a result of a bomb explosion; and
Whereas Thomas Paul Tennant grew up in the Salem area and,
after graduating from Sprague High School in 1975, continued his
education by obtaining an associate degree from Chemeketa
Community College in 1977 and a bachelor's degree in Social
Science from the Oregon College of Education (now Western Oregon
University) in 1979; and
Whereas Thomas Paul Tennant, while attending high school, was a
member of the Salem Police Department Cadet Unit, which he helped
organize in 1974; and
Whereas Thomas Paul Tennant pursued a career in law enforcement
beginning with the Hubbard and Salem Police Departments before
moving to the Woodburn Police Department in September 1980; and
Whereas Thomas Paul Tennant was promoted to the rank of
Sergeant in July 1989, attended and graduated from the FBI
National Academy in December 1993 and was promoted to Captain in
November 2004; and
Whereas Thomas Paul Tennant was proud to be a part of the
Woodburn Police Department, was fiercely loyal to his officers
and members of the department and had a strong desire to impart
the knowledge that he had gained over the years to younger
officers; and
Whereas Thomas Paul Tennant's first priority was his wife,
Mary, and three children, Becky, Jenny and Scott, who were his
pride and joy, no matter how busy his schedule became; and
Whereas Thomas Paul Tennant took every opportunity to enjoy and
support his wife and children by volunteering at school and
athletic events, including St. Luke Catholic School, Woodburn
High School, Woodburn High School Bulldog Foundation and Blanchet
Catholic School; and
Whereas Thomas Paul Tennant was a member of various community
service organizations and volunteered his time on community
events and fundraisers held by the Kiwanis, American Cancer
Society and the City of Woodburn; and
Whereas Thomas Paul Tennant loved the outdoors and enjoyed many
activities with his family and friends, including hunting,
shooting, fishing, camping, hiking, boating and riding his
all-terrain vehicle; now, therefore,
Be It Resolved by the Legislative Assembly of the State of
Oregon:
That we, the members of the Seventy-fifth Legislative Assembly,
on behalf of all Oregonians, recognize, honor and express our
gratitude to Thomas Paul Tennant for his service to the State of
Oregon; and be it further
Resolved, That a copy of this resolution shall be presented to
his family as an expression of our esteem, appreciation and
condolences.
