Chapter 67
Oregon Laws 2011
AN ACT
SB 951
Relating to
Korean War veterans.
Whereas on June 25, 1950, Communist
North Korea crossed the 38th Parallel and invaded South Korea, initiating the
Korean War; and
Whereas the United Nations condemned
this act of aggression and the United States led 20 western nations, fighting
under the aegis and flag of the United Nations, to the aid of South Korea; and
Whereas Oregon is home to
approximately 340,000 veterans of military service in the Armed Forces of the
United States, with an estimated 39,000 of them having served in the Korean
War; and
Whereas 298 Oregonians are listed as
killed or missing in action in this war; and
Whereas the Korean War is often
referred to as the Forgotten War because veterans returned home without
acknowledgement or support; and
Whereas although on July 27, 1953, an
armistice agreement was signed, the Korean War officially continues to this day
without a peace treaty; and
Whereas Oregon honors its veterans and
the sacrifices they and their families have made in service to our state and
nation; now, therefore,
Be It Enacted by the People of the State of Oregon:
SECTION 1. June 25 of every year
is designated as Korean War Veterans Honor Day.
