                             SUMMARY
 
The following summary is not prepared by the sponsors of the

brief statement of the essential features of the measure as
introduced.
 
  In memoriam: Allen Harry Boice, 1926-2010.
 
                      CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
  Whereas Allen Harry Boice was born on November 29, 1926, in
Langlois, Oregon, the 11th of 12 children, and passed away in
Sutherlin on November 1, 2010; and
  Whereas Allen Boice attended Langlois schools for most of his
formal education until he quit school in his junior year to join
the United States Marine Corps; and
  Whereas Allen Boice was among the Marines sent to Japan as part
of the occupation forces, serving there from September 1945 to
June 1946, and then shipped out to China, where he was with the
occupation forces as a China Marine until March 1947, when he was
honorably discharged; and
  Whereas although Allen Boice was best known as the Curry County
Sheriff from 1967 to 1977, he worked at a variety of jobs,
including logger, bartender and owner of a service station, and
after his retirement as Curry County Sheriff he became the owner
of the Paradise Bar Lodge on the Rogue River; and
  Whereas Allen Boice in 1962 was asked to take the job as Chief
Deputy, a position he held until his resignation a few years
later; and
  Whereas Allen Boice later filed for the position of sheriff and
was elected in 1967; and
  Whereas one of his first acts as Curry County Sheriff was to
institute new rules for prisoners, eliminating frivolous
magazines and gourmet meals the prisoners had been getting and
putting trustees to work on projects throughout Curry County; and
  Whereas Allen Boice earned his general education diploma (GED)
and in 1974 was accepted at the Federal Bureau of Investigation
school in Quantico, Virginia, where he became proficient in
operating lie detector equipment; and
  Whereas Allen Boice organized a Sheriff's Posse and started a
search and rescue program that proved invaluable to people lost
in the rugged backcountry of Curry County; and
  Whereas in 1972, in response to a complaint about abandoned
junk cars, Allen Boice with his crew collected 666 cars that were
crushed and taken to recycling stations; and
  Whereas Allen Boice was one of the first to realize the
dangerous impacts of illegal drugs, and in 1969 and 1970 he
presented almost 25 programs on the dangers of narcotics at high
schools, parent-teacher associations, service clubs and to any
other groups that would listen; and
  Whereas Allen Boice submitted his resignation as Curry County
Sheriff in 1977, after which time he and his wife, Meryl,
operated the Paradise Bar Lodge for several years; and
  Whereas Allen Boice continued on the property for many years
and finally turned it over to his son and daughter-in-law in
1982; and
  Whereas Allen Boice made many improvements to the Paradise Bar
Lodge over those years, turning it into one of the finest lodges
on the Rogue River, with thousands of people, including
Presidents, Senators, actors and athletes enjoying a stay there;
now, therefore,
Be It Resolved by the Legislative Assembly of the State of
  Oregon:
  That we, the members of the Seventy-sixth Legislative Assembly,
send our condolences to the family of Allen Harry Boice and
express gratitude and appreciation for his years of dedicated and
forward thinking as Curry County Sheriff and for his
contributions to the betterment of the residents of Curry County;
and be it further
  Resolved, That a copy of this resolution be presented to the
family of Allen Harry Boice as an expression of our condolences.
