SUMMARY

brief statement of the essential features of the measure as
introduced.
Provides that Interstate 84 in Oregon shall be known as Vietnam
Veterans Memorial Highway.
A BILL FOR AN ACT
Relating to Vietnam Veterans Memorial Highway.
Whereas during the Vietnam War more than 57,000 Oregonians
served in Vietnam, Thailand, Cambodia and Laos on land and sea
and in the air; and
Whereas 719 Oregonians lost their lives and more than 5,000
were wounded during the Vietnam War; and
Whereas 39 Oregonians remain missing in action; and
Whereas 118,000 Vietnam veterans live in Oregon and represent
34 percent of all Oregon veterans; and
Whereas 33 states have dedicated Vietnam veterans' memorial
highways honoring their Vietnam veterans; and
Whereas Interstate 84 in Oregon does not pay tribute to any
other veterans group; and
Whereas the Oregon State Council, Vietnam Veterans of America,
has offered to pay the funds necessary for creating, installing
and maintaining 'Vietnam Veterans Memorial Highway ' signs; now,
therefore,
Be It Enacted by the People of the State of Oregon:
SECTION 1. { + (1) The portion of Interstate 84, beginning
where it intersects with Interstate 5 in Portland and ending at
the Idaho state line, shall also be known as the Vietnam Veterans
Memorial Highway.
(2) The Department of Transportation shall place and maintain
suitable markers along the highway described in this section that
indicate the designation of the highway as the Vietnam Veterans
Memorial Highway.
(3)(a) The department may accept moneys from and may enter into
agreements with veterans groups to create, install and maintain
the markers.
(b) The department may not use public funds for the
installation and maintenance of the markers. + }
