Capitol Tour Options - Back to the Top

Call Visitor Services to schedule a tour today at 503-986-1388.

Historical Building Tour: (Scheduled hourly 9 a.m. - 3 p.m. Monday through Friday) As you walk throughout the building your tour guide will share information on the history of the State Capitol, Oregon and the Legislative process. This tour is recommended for fourth grade and older and is available during regular building hours. Click here to view a Capitol Tour video.
Legislative Tour: Legislative tours are available during the Legislative Session. You will see your legislators in committee and during chamber floor session. You will also learn how a bill becomes a law. This tour is recommended for middle school grades and older.
Tower Tour: (Scheduled hourly 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. Monday through Friday) Beginning Spring Break and running through September, weather permitting, this tour involves a climb of 121-steps to the observation deck. Enjoy the view of the City of Salem, and learn all about the Golden Pioneer. This tour is recommended for fourth grade and older. A video tower tour is available for those unable to climb the stairs to the observation deck.
Self-Guided Tour: A self-guided tour brochure is available at the Visitors Kiosk, located on the first floor.

Plan on arriving 15 minutes prior to your tour time. Late arrivals will conflict with other tour groups and could cause your group to miss a portion of your tour. If requesting a school tour, we ask that your group include one adult for every ten students. If the tower trip is part of your tour, the adult to student ratio needs to remain constant throughout the entire tour.

Art of the Time - Art of the People: An art collection representing almost every type of artwork which is a tribute to the range and vivacity of creative minds. The collection features over 150 Oregon artists. Pick up a self-guided brochure at the Visitor Information Kiosk located on the first floor.
Artwork Catalog - A complete catalog of the Capitol art collection is available for purchase in Room 49, located on the ground floor.
Oregon Landmark Legislation - The 16 exhibit windows located on the first floor, highlight groundbreaking legislation that Oregon has passed since Statehood either by Politician, Legislative Action, or Public Initiative. The display cases are arranged chronologically presenting legislation that focuses on environmental, social and land use issues.
Oregon Rock & Mineral Exhibit - Located near the Capitol Rotunda, this display is rotated regularly and features collections from rock and mineral clubs from around Oregon.

The Capitol Gift Shop showcases a wide variety of Oregon products and Oregon artists. The Gift Shop will gladly work with you to find the perfect gift. For a reasonable shipping and handling fee, the Gift Shop will also wrap and ship the item.

Decorum - Back to the Top

Knowing and following decorum will make your visit to the Capitol more enjoyable:

In consideration of others in the Capitol, please encourage your group to be quiet and orderly.
When using stairs and hallways, please stay to the right and behind your guide.
When visiting the galleries, please do not put your feet or other items such as purses or papers on the wooden ledges in the front row of seats. Please hold on to your camera equipment and information pamphlets.
No food or beverage is allowed in the chamber galleries.
No flash photography in galleries during floor sessions.
Sliding down the staircases in the Rotunda is not allowed.

Eating options - Back to the Top

Your group is welcome to bring lunches and eat outside in the State Capitol State Park or on the grand staircase in the Capitol Rotunda. Please contact Visitor Services at 503-986-1388 if you are planning lunch in the Rotunda. Cafe at the Capitol (503-585-4266) is located on the ground floor of the Capitol.
