Capitol Update
State Senator Jackie Dingfelder Senate District 23 Northeast and Southeast Portland
Dear Friends and Neighbors,
This week, with the opening of the 75th Legislature, I
had the honor of being sworn in as the new State
Senator for District 23. This Legislature opens during
trying economic conditions and the state of our
economy will be a focus of this session. Despite the
economic forecast, I am optimistic that this session
will see the passage of legislation that not only helps
our economy recover but also creates new jobs,
broadens access to healthcare, and addresses the
challenges of global warming. On a personal note, I
am also proud to serve as Chair of the Senate
Environment and Natural Resources Committee, and
as a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee and
Ways and Means Subcommittee on Natural
Resources.
My staff and I are happy to field your questions about
state programs and pending legislation or resolve
issues you may have regarding state agencies and
actions. Thank you for subscribing to Capital
Update. You may unsubscribe at any time by using
the link at the bottom of the newsletter. As always, I
am honored to represent you.

Opening Day at the Capital
This past Monday saw the opening of the 2009
Legislature and the first session in which I will serve
as a State Senator. The Senate has a large freshman
class, including myself and valued colleagues such
as Sen. Diane Rosenbaum and Sen. Martha
Schrader. I look forward to serving this session with
such a large collection of gifted and able legislators.
These two pictures are from the opening day of the
new Legislature. In the first, I am at my new Senate
desk. In the second, I am with Senators Diane
Rosenbaum (to my right) and Martha Schrader (to my
left).
My 2009 Committee Assignments
I have been assigned this session to Chair the
Senate Environment and Natural Resources
Committee and to serve as a member of the Senate
Judiciary Committee and Ways and Means
Subcommittee on Natural Resources. As you may
know, last session I served as Chair of the House
Energy and Environment Committee and I am excited
that I have the opportunity to stay at the forefront of our
state's efforts to curb global warming, protect our
drinking water, and preserve Oregon's livability.
My committees are scheduled at the following times:
- The Senate Environment and Natural Resources
Committee meets Tuesdays and Thursdays from
3:00:-5:00 pm.
- The Ways and Means Subcommittee on Natural
Resources meets Monday through Thursday from
1:00-2:30 pm.
- The Senate Judiciary committee meets Monday
through Thursday from 8:00-10:00 am.
Town Hall on January 24th
On Saturday, January 24th, I will be participating in a
town hall with Rep. Ben Cannon and Rep. Michael
Dembrow. There are many pressing issues before
the legislature, including a constrained budget, and I
look forward to you sharing your thoughts and
concerns.
- When: 10:00 am until noon
- Where: Hollywood Senior Center, 1820 NE 40th
Ave., Portland, 97213
Meet My Staff
I am fortunate to have two exceptional legislative
staffers this session, Jill Gray and Aaron Rabiroff.
Jill Gray began as my Legislative Aide in 2005 and I
am pleased that she is continuing in her position in
the Senate. Jill grew up in Gresham and has lived in
the Portland area all her life. She has a BA in Politics
and a law degree from Willamette University, and
perhaps will earn another degree but that will have to
wait for another time. Jill worked for a watershed
stewardship program in Clark County, Washington,
before working for me. She also worked on local
campaigns and volunteered with the Oregon League
of Conservation Voters local steering committee. In
her spare time Jill likes to read, sample a lot of
chocolate, and practice her Spanish skills.
Aaron Rabiroff has joined my staff this year as an
additional Legislative Aide. Aaron is originally from
California but has lived his adult life in the Portland
area. He has a BA in Political Science from Reed
College and a law degree from Lewis and Clark
College. Before joining my staff he worked for the
Oregon House Democrats and was involved with
John Kroger's campaign for Oregon Attorney General.
He also worked for as a contract attorney in Portland.
In his free time he enjoys basketball and researching
American history.
