Representative Mary Nolan
D-Portland
District 36

Friends and Neighbors,

House Democrats are committed to getting Oregon’s economy moving again. We are focused on job creation and helping families struggling under the weight of this recession. We continue to meet these challenges, and do so within the framework of a balanced budget.

Small businesses are the catalyst of our economy. Private employment will spark our recovery. That’s why we voted to provide more capital for small businesses that create new, full-time jobs in Oregon. It’s why we worked to streamline, improve and expand the loan process for the Oregon Business Development Fund. House Democrats are making sure small businesses get more help and get it faster.

We passed laws to make a real difference for Oregonians, especially families who are struggling during these difficult economic times. We passed sweeping health care reforms that will cover 95% of Oregon kids and tens of thousands of additional adults. We extended unemployment benefits for Oregonians whose benefits have run out or will soon expire.

We protected Oregonians from fraud and abuse by bringing banks and other credit services under the Unlawful Trade Practices Act, giving the Attorney General and individual consumers the chance to hold lenders accountable. We strengthened regulations on mortgage lenders by cracking down on risky loan products like negative amortization loans. We prohibited insurance companies from discriminating against victims of sexual violence by treating that victimization as a preexisting condition.

Oregon has been hit hard by the global economic crisis. Unemployment is still too high. We know that government can’t do everything, but our actions will help small businesses, out-of-work Oregonians and families recover from this recession.

Please see the House Democrats’ page for more information about our accomplishments during both the 2010 supplemental session and the 2009 regular session. Thanks to all of you who kept in touch throughout the session. Your involvement helped shape our agenda to move Oregon forward.

Very truly yours,
sig
Mary Nolan
