Statement from Senate President Peter
Courtney on Health Care for Kids &
NOAA’s Selection of Newport, Ore.
(SALEM)
– “Today has been a day of major achievement for Oregon. Two big pieces of news, one expected
and one a surprise, are cause for celebration.”
“First, this morning we witnessed the signing of a historic
expansion of health care coverage for virtually all Oregon children. Because of the
Legislature’s hard work, spirit of collaboration, and a shared belief
that no child in Oregon
should suffer from lack of basic health care, we saw the final signature on a
comprehensive package that will take care of the next generation of Oregonians.”
“While the conversation about comprehensive health care reform
continues across the nation, our state took a major step forward this morning
by taking care of our most vulnerable.”
“Later this morning, we received word that Oregon would be the newest home to a fleet
of vessels operated by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Our
own coastal community of Newport
beat out cities up and down the Pacific coast to host these ships for the next
20 years. This is a major accomplishment for both the people of the Oregon coast and for our
state’s reputation for excellence in marine research.”
“The economic challenges that have characterized Oregon’s recent
history have not disappeared, but good news like we’ve heard today is a
welcome break. Our brightest days are ahead of us. Today’s achievements
are a heartening reminder of that fact. It’s a good day for Oregon – wins for
both jobs and kids – it doesn’t get any better than that.”
