Statement by Senate President Peter Courtney

“In the campaigns every one of us said we have to create jobs. Everybody wants us to do something about jobs. The truth is that most of the time, as a state, we are very limited in what we can do to create jobs. This is a rare opportunity and we’re not going to miss it. We’re going to send a signal to the rest of the country by coming into special session and taking action.

“Nike is a home-grown Oregon company that wants to expand here. Other states are putting together incentive programs to try and lure away thousands of jobs. Oregon is being asked to play by the rules that are already in place and provide certainty for the future. We’re going to use our home-field advantage to protect and grow jobs in this state.”

Note to editors: Governor Kitzhaber today signed a proclamation calling the Legislature into special session on Friday to consider legislation he said will lead to an expansion of Nike’s operations in Oregon.
