SENATE PRESIDENT WELCOMES STEINER HAYWARD
AS NEWEST MEMBER OF OREGON STATE SENATE
(SALEM) - Senate President Peter Courtney welcomed Elizabeth Steiner Hayward, D-Portland, as the newest member of the Oregon State Senate Wednesday. "Dr. Steiner Hayward is a perfect fit for the Senate. She is a respected physician with a solid history as an advocate in the public policy arena. She is joining us at a critical time and will be an asset in our work in the February session," Courtney said. "I'm delighted at her selection and look forward to working with her." Steiner Hayward was selected by the Washington and Multnomah County Boards of Commissioners in a special joint meeting Wednesday to fill the vacancy in Senate District 17. The seat was vacated with the resignation last month of Senator Suzanne Bonamici, the Democratic nominee in the special election in Oregon's 1st Congressional District. Steiner Hayward earned a bachelor of arts degree from University of Chicago and doctor of medicine degree from the University of Massachusetts Medical School. She completed her residency at Oregon Health and Science University, where she is currently the co-chair of the Institutional Review Board. Dr. Steiner Hayward is currently president of Oregon Academy of Family Physicians. She served as chair of the Academy's Public Policy and Legislative Affairs Commission from 2002 until 2010. Additionally, she is a member of the Oregon Medical Association's Legislative Affairs Committee. A date and time for Dr. Steiner Hayward's swearing in ceremony will be announced soon.
