Hass picked to lead Senate Committee on Education
SALEM— In an announcement from the Senate President’s Office, Sen. Mark Hass (D-Beaverton) was appointed chair of the Senate Committee on Education and Workforce Development for the upcoming 2011 Legislative Session. Hass served as chair of the Education and General Government in the 2009 and 2010 legislative sessions.
“A strong economy and a strong educational system go hand in hand,” Hass said. “You can’t have one without the other.”
Hass is currently co-chairing a special legislative task force on higher education. The task force is expected to finish its work at its final meeting this Wednesday. Those recommendations, in the form of three separate pieces of legislation, will be forwarded to the 2011 legislature. The legislation seeks to give Oregon universities more flexibility and to make college more affordable for Oregon High School graduates.
"This package of bills will help put our universities back on a course for success. For too long that course has been charted by inertia," Hass said.
As the parent of two young children, Hass is also an active champion for full day kindergarten and teacher mentoring programs, both issues that will be addressed in February by the Senate Education Committee.
In addition to chairing the Senate Committee on Education, Hass will serve on the Senate committees on Environment & Natural Resources and Finance & Revenue.
