Majority Leader Nolan Comments on Unemployment Figures

House Democrats’ Job Creation and Family Support Plan will help

STATEMENT FROM HOUSE MAJORITY LEADER MARY NOLAN

“Oregon’s unemployment rate is now 9.9%.  In many counties, the number is well into double digits.  Like other states across the country the trends are heading the wrong direction.  House Democrats have already done much to address this crisis and are planning to do more.

“Last month, we passed the first installment of our stimulus package.  The projects included are shovel-ready and many are slated to start almost immediately, creating jobs now.  And we recently passed the Housing Opportunity Bill, which will create jobs in the hard-hit construction sector.

“These two bills are just part of the House Democrats’ Job Creation and Family Support Plan.  There are many more initiatives now underway.  The numbers today underscore how important it is to redouble our efforts to get people back to work in our state.

  • This year we will pass a statewide transportation package to create jobs and revitalize our infrastructure.
  • To create jobs and save money for homeowners and businesses, we will make it easier for them to make energy efficiency upgrades.
  • We will put people to work creating healthier forests and stronger rural communities.
  • We will work to provide additional apprenticeship and job training opportunities for Oregonians.
  • We will help those Oregonians who are out of work by giving them the assistance they need to land on their feet.

“Our Job Creation and Family Support Plan is aimed at providing jobs to rebuild our economy, protecting families facing tough times and preparing for a brighter future.  We have done much already, but there is much more to do.  These tough times demand strong leadership.  House Democrats will provide the leadership Oregon deserves.”
