Senate Democrats elect leaders, reaffirm commitment to growing economy, protecting Oregon families

GLENEDEN BEACH – The Senate Democrats today announced their leaders for the 2011 legislative session. At a retreat held in Gleneden Beach this afternoon, Senate Democrats elected the following:

  • Senate President: Peter Courtney (D-Salem/Woodburn/Gervais)
  • Senate President Pro Tempore: Ginny Burdick (D-Portland/Tigard)
  • Senate Majority Leader:  Diane Rosenbaum (D-Portland)
  • Senate Deputy Majority Leader:  Alan Bates (D-Ashland)
  • Senate Majority Whip:  Mark Hass (D-Beaverton)
  • Senate Majority Whip:  Chris Edwards (D-Eugene/Santa Clara/Junction City)
  • Senate Assistant Majority Leader:  Suzanne Bonamici (D-NW Portland/Beaverton)
  • Senate Assistant Majority Leader:  Floyd Prozanski (D-South Lane & North Douglas Counties)

“Today’s leadership election demonstrates the abundance of talented, diverse, and committed members in the Senate Majority Caucus,” said Senate Majority Leader Rosenbaum. “I am excited about the opportunity to serve my colleagues as their leader and look forward to advancing a vision for Oregon that puts our families first, protects our schools, and gets our economy back on track.”

During the 2009 session, Rosenbaum served as Senate Assistant Majority Leader and as Chair of the Commerce and Workforce Development Committee. Prior to serving the Senate, Rosenbuam served 10 years in the Oregon House, including many years in leadership positions such as House Speaker, Speaker Pro Tempore, House Democratic Whip, and Chair of the House Elections, Ethics and Rules Committee.

Under Senate Rules, Senators Courtney and Burdick must receive a majority of votes from the full Senate to be elected President and President Pro Tempore, respectively. Democrats will hold 16 seats in the 2011 Senate, which will convene January 10 for an organizing session to elect leaders, adopt rules, and appoint committees. The regular legislative session begins February 1, 2011.
