Last week the House passed HB 2386 to direct the Secretary of State to develop an electronic voter system. While recognizing the need to develop such a system, Rep. Matt Wingard (R-Wilsonville) expressed concerns about how HB 2386 would affect the integrity of Oregon’s elections. Rep. Wingard said the bill does not adequately reflect the implementation of Oregon’s Real ID law, which was passed last year to strengthen the security of Oregon’s driver’s licenses and identification cards.

The electronic voters system under HB 2386 would allow individuals to register to vote using old driver’s licenses. The old licenses lack the strong standards, such as proof of legal presence, that are featured in Oregon’s Real ID law.
